One Nursing Home Accounts for 23 COVID-19 Deaths
JOLIET, Ill. — The Symphony nursing home of Joliet, Illinois, has been infiltrated by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to The Herald-News. Over 20 people have died, including one staff member at the home. The Symphony nursing facility has the highest concentration of COVID-19-positive patients out of any nursing home in Illinois. However, the Symphony of Joliet is not alone. Sadly, the rate of COVID-19 infection in Illinois nursing homes has doubled in one week’s time. However, 20 people from Symphony died in the last seven days and 23 overall since March 27, 2020, from COVID-19. All residents who received negative COVID-19 tests have moved out of the facility and into others run by the same company. *
A spokesperson for the Symphony of Joliet nursing home said that the only patients who remain in the Joliet nursing home have tested positive for COVID-19. All residents who received negative tests were transferred to other facilities in the region. The spokesperson also said that healthcare workers committed to treating the residents with COVID-19 are working exclusively with those patients and no others.
Before the novel coronavirus infiltrated the Symphony nursing home, 165 people lived there. The facility has 200 beds. The first person affiliated with the Symphony of Joliet passed away from COVID-19 on March 27. By April 7, two other people affiliated with the home, including one staff member, had died. Since that time, 20 other people have lost their battle with COVID-19. The administration of the home did not say how many people had the disease overall. The mayor of Joliet said that at least fifteen people living there have COVID-19.
No one is sure why the deaths in this one particular nursing home have escalated so rapidly. Although this nursing home has the most cases in the state, COVID-19 cases in Joliet and Will County have also shot up during the same timeframe. Additionally, Will County health officials have confirmed that there was at least one case of COVID-19 in eighteen nursing homes in the county.
