Police Remind Drivers to Still Stop for School Buses
MACON, GA- Wgxa.com writes that due to the outbreak of COVID-19, students are not attending school. Still, school bus drivers are operating the buses are making rounds to deliver food, and drivers must follow the law and stop for these buses.*
Officials in the state released a statement reminding motorists that the law is still in effect, even though students are not taking these buses. Many buses are still following their normal routes and delivering food to children. Pedestrians and cyclists may be at the school bus stop to pick up food, meaning that drivers need to use extra caution around these vehicles and continue to stop when the bus extends its stop sign arm.
Georgia law dictates that drivers must stop for a school bus when the sign is displayed. The stop sign applies to drivers behind the bus, but also to those traveling in the opposite direction. Even on multiple lane roads, all drivers are required to stop and wait until the sign is no longer extended. If the bus is on a divided highway with four lanes or more with median separation, then only drivers in the lanes traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop.
The penalties for violating a school bus stop sign are steep. A driver caught passing a bus while the stop sign arm is displayed will have a mandatory court appearance. Those convicted of this traffic violation will be fined up to $1,000 and have six points added to their driving record.
