E-Scooters Continue to Present Risks of Head Injuries

February 10, 2020

FLORIDA- The writes that electronic scooter accidents are becoming somewhat commonplace in Fort Lauderdale. One emergency room doctor said it is not unusual to see victims with severe head injuries in the hospital due to scooter crashes, especially on weekends.*

A fall from a scooter means riders will often strike their heads on the pavement. At the Broward Health Medical Center, over 100 scooter accident victims have been transported by ambulance for treatment of fall-related injuries.

Electronic scooter injuries to the head and face have increased by approximately 300 percent within the last ten years. While the devices are increasing in popularity, helmets are considered optional, and many riders opt for no head protection. While doctors in emergency rooms are getting accustomed to treating scooter accident victims with brain hemorrhages and concussions, many people are still completely oblivious to the risks presented by using a scooter without a helmet.

Studies indicate that only two to four percent of people who have suffered scooter injuries had a helmet on at the time of the incident. A study into scooter riding injuries that was carried out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that just one in 190 people injured in scooter crashes was wearing a helmet.

Florida law does not require a rider to use a helmet unless the scooter is traveling above 30 miles per hour. The scooters are available for rentals, but helmets are not. As such, many riders who rent the devices on a whim do not have a helmet to use at the time. While companies that provide scooters are encouraging riders to use them, few are complying. The simple message from doctors and paramedics is that failing to use a helmet while riding a scooter is a recipe for severe injuries.
