Three New Pedestrian Crossings to Be Installed in NW Atlanta

February 05, 2020

GEORGIA - Atlanta is working to create additional pedestrian crossings to increase safety throughout the city, according to AJC.COM. Over the course of the next year, three crossings will be added in Atlanta along Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, including one at the location where a fourteen-year-old boy was tragically struck and killed in 2019.*

The tragic incident took place in the fall while the freshman at Douglas High School was waiting to take the bus to school. According to one engineer with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), some have been working on getting a crosswalk in the area for many years.

Reports indicate that the city will be installing high-intensity activated crosswalks or HAWK signals. These signals will allow pedestrians to push a button that will activate a flashing light alerting drivers of the need to allow pedestrians to cross. The lights will cycle between yellow, flashing yellow, and red.

GDOT looked into the area flowing the deadly incident and identified two other high-risk areas in which to install the HAWK signals.

The 32-year-old Atlanta woman who struck the child was later arrested and charged with three misdemeanors related to her speed at the time of the crash. A speed analysis found that the woman was traveling at somewhere between 62 and 65 miles per hour when her Chevrolet Camaro killed the student. The speed limit on the relevant stretch of road is 35-miles-per-hour.  The charges against the driver include speeding, driving on an expired license plate, and second-degree vehicular homicide.
