Cameras in School Zones in Roswell, Georgia

February 05, 2020

ROSWELL, GA- Roswell is installing cameras in school zones to catch drivers who are speeding, CBS46.COM. Starting February 3rd, there will be a grace period of 30-days in which drivers will receive warnings before the Automated Enforcement of School Zones program becomes fully effective.*

Drivers traveling over ten miles above the speed limit will be targeted by the cameras. Officials stated that the cameras will only be active for one hour prior to school until one hour after school is dismissed, only on school days. On nights and weekends, the cameras will not be operating. Until the completion of the warning period, drivers will be receiving mailed warning notices when they are caught speeding in the area at the relevant times. While the system will be capturing the offending drivers, a police officer will be reviewing the citations before they are sent out.

Officials say that the plan is being instituted in an effort to combat the rising number of pedestrian deaths across the country. Georgia’s pedestrian fatality rate is higher than average, and the state ranks as the seventh worst state in the nation for deadly pedestrian crashes. Police officers in the area hope that the program will be able to encourage safer driving throughout the area and save lives.

Traffic fatalities are the leading cause of death for young children between the ages of five and fourteen and for young adults.  According to city officials, violations will come with a $75 fine for a first offense and $125 for repeat offenders.
