GDOT Considering a Pedestrian Scramble Near Georgia College Campus
GEORGIA - The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has plans to make safety improvements to busy and heavily trafficked areas near Georgia College, according to UNIONRECORDER.COM. A student was struck by a vehicle on campus recently, leading to a petition aimed at making the campus safer for pedestrian traffic.*
One possible solution considered by the GDOT is the use of a “pedestrian scramble.” The intersection of Hancock and Clarke Streets, which is close to the campus dining hall, may get a pedestrian scramble soon. A pedestrian scramble uses traffic light timing to stop all vehicles at the same time so that pedestrians may cross the intersection at once without fear of turning vehicles or confusion about who has the right of way. Pedestrians may even cross diagonally through the intersection when it is their opportunity to go.
Another solution considered is high-intensity activated crosswalks, or HAWK for short. These are used mid-block and activate when a pedestrian pushes a button. GDOT is hoping to complete the projects over the 2020 summer so that they are finished when students return for the fall semester. Pedestrian scrambles are fairly new and have not been tested on a large scale. The information that is currently available indicates that these crosswalks are an effective way to reduce pedestrian fatalities.
