Montgomery Working to Make County Roads Safer for Pedestrians

January 31, 2020

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, AL- The washingtontimes.com writes that Montgomery County has committed itself to eliminating traffic-related deaths by the year 2030. After three pedestrians died in tragic collisions this month, the county officials are holding meetings to discuss their “Vision Zero” objectives.*

At a council meeting, representatives expressed disappointment at the need to hold such talks. Working to make the roads safer has become a necessity after the fatal crashes pointed to the currently inadequate safety standards.

The first pedestrian fatalities in the county this year took place when a 75-year-old man was struck by a car at the intersection of Aspen Hill Road and Georgia Avenue. Officers who responded to the scene found that the victim had a pedestrian safety pamphlet in his pocket. Two more pedestrians died within the following week. The first was a 40-year-old man, and the second a 32 year-old-man. Both victims died within the same 24-hour period in crashes on Rockville Pike.

Data indicates that the county failed to meet its Vision Zero goal for 2019. With 265 crashes causing serious injuries or deaths in the county, Montgomery dropped 28 percent as compared to the average number of such incidents per year. Despite the progress, the state had to drop deaths and severe injuries by 35 percent in order to stay on track with its zero deaths by 2030 goal.

Sadly, the county also increased its number of fatalities as compared to 2018. Clearly, more must be done if officials are truly committed to eliminating traffic deaths. With fourteen vulnerable road users dying in 2019, pedestrian safety should be a major consideration in any future plans.
