Macon-Bibb Working to Improve Pedestrian Safety
MACON, GA- Construction crews have been hard at work making improvements to numerous crosswalks in the Macon-Bibb area, according to 41NBC.COM. The Georgia Department of Transportation (G-DOT) is looking to improve pedestrian safety following several tragic pedestrian accidents.*
A spokesperson for G-DOT stated that the county has a high volume of foot traffic and that officials need to be working to keep pedestrians safer. It is vital that the new improvements consider convenience and efficiency for all road users, as well. Projects are currently taking place near the Macon Mall, at Eisenhower and Heron and at Eisenhower and Bloomfield. Another traffic signal was installed at the Interstate 75 north exit this week. As part of federal policy, improvements to pedestrian crossings are needed at intersections whenever traffic signals are upgraded in the state.
Over the past several years, the number of pedestrian deaths has become alarming to traffic officials and safety advocates. With more than 6,000 fatal pedestrian crashes occurring in the United States every year, it is important that safety issues are taken seriously and that roads are designed with pedestrian safety as a main consideration. In many places, infrastructure is not providing the appropriate protection for people who are walking near the roadway. Additional crosswalks, sidewalks, and other features will help reduce the chances of tragic crashes.
