American Medical Association Advocates for Safer Driving

January 10, 2020

USA - Eight people tragically die in distracted driving crashes every day in the United States, and more than 1,000 sustain injuries in these collisions, according to AMA-ASSN.ORG. Despite plenty of research that indicates the scope of the problem, states are not taking the necessary steps to prevent and deter this dangerous behavior.*

Currently, 48 states have laws that make it illegal to text and drive, such as Georgia's Hands-Free Law that was enacted in 2018. However, only 20 states prohibit drivers from using handheld devices entirely while operating a motor vehicle.  Georgia's law explicitly bars drivers from holding their cell phones, however, residents are allowed a single touch to start or end a call.

Those in the medical profession are encouraging states to continue to take action and prevent distracted driving.  The American Medical Association (AMA) encourages the 30 states that have not yet prohibited holding hand-held devices while driving to step up and take further action to protect people on the roadway. As part of its efforts, the AMA created a model bill, called the “Distracted Driving Reduction Act,” that state legislators could reference when drafting hands-free laws in their jurisdictions. The proposed ban would prevent talking, emailing, texting, using the internet and other actions on a device while a person is operating a vehicle. The AMA’s proposed bill allows for exceptions, including for medical professionals, law enforcement officers and for emergencies and navigation purposes.

The AMA states that it will continue to serve as an advocate for safer driving laws.
