Electric Scooters Come to Mobile in 2020
MOBILE, AL - Al.com reported that 200 e-scooters will hit the streets in Mobile this week. The scooter company Gotcha, which is based in South Carolina, is providing the devices. The scooters will be left in various places throughout the city. The Mayor announced the scooter campaign on Christmas morning online.*
Despite the excitement generated by the new scooters, many people are still concerned about the potential risks associated with the devices. According to officials, the scooters will be subject to rules similar to those that apply to cyclists. Effectively, scooters will not be permitted on the sidewalk and will have to follow traffic signals in the same way as cars. The devices are permitted to be used between the hours of six in the morning and eleven at night. Many feel it is unsafe for people to be using the scooters on the roadway late at night, and there are concerns about alcohol-related accidents and scooters.
Riders must be at least eighteen to operate the scooters and the scooters have a weight limit of 275 pounds. There is no requirement that riders use helmets while on the scooters, however, the company strongly encourages riders use use helmets whenever renting scooters. Alabama law only states that helmets are required for cyclists up to age sixteen.
Gotcha, which recently stopped operating in Nashville, states that it is planning to provide scooters in places with transportation challenges. The company says that it will select locations where its micro-mobility devices will be able to make the most significant impact. Towns with universities are appealing to many scooter companies.
