E-Scooters Causing Problems at NCSU

December 27, 2019

NORTH CAROLINA - E-scooters at North Carolina State University (NCSU) are now linked to many accidents throughout the area, according to BIZJOURNALS.COM.  Injuries ranging from bruises to bone fractures and reports of reckless scooter driving are making some question whether the scooters are anything more than a menace.*

Seventeen accidents took place involving the scooters though mid-November, and the incidents are broad. There have been thefts and even a scooter being used as a getaway vehicle for vandalism.  One incident involved two cyclists and a scooter rider that sent all three individuals to the hospital. Collisions occurred sometimes on crosswalks with other pedestrians and at other times because a scooter broke, causing serious injury to the scooter rider.

Reports indicate that scooter riders were involved in hit-and-run accidents on Lime scooters.  In one instance, a scooter rider ran over a woman’s foot in a crosswalk, then fled the scene after stating to the woman, "You're supposed to look both ways."  Another scooter rider caused damage to a car and then, after initially offering to pay the driver $150, left the scene.

The majority of reports, in fact all but two, involve accidents in which the scooter rider was at fault.

Drunk scooter riding is now an issue, as well. Police arrested two individuals for underage drinking after the youths ran through a stop sign on the scooters.

The scooter company, Lime, has also not been helpful in addressing the hit-and-run events when investigated by police. The company says that the location and time of an incident is not enough information for them to determine who had rented the involved scooter.

The scooters are causing problems at other university campuses as well. UNC-Chapel Hill reported five incidents involving the e-scooters on their campus.
