Historic Bridge To Connect Duluth and Johns Creek Once Restored

December 23, 2019

GEORGIA- A historic bridge built in 1912 is being restored to serve as a pedestrian walkway between Fulton County and Gwinnett County, according to PATCH.COM. The bridge is in poor condition currently, but the two counties and the cities of Johns Creek and Duluth came together to provide funding for the restoration.*

The bridge crosses over the Chattahoochee River and has not been used for vehicles in over three decades. Duluth is in charge of the management of the project, which is slated to begin in 2020.

The bridge is connecting the counties and cities in a way that will facilitate recreational activities throughout the region. The bridge also connects to a trail. According to officials, the pedestrian bridge will help people appreciate wildlife in the region. Most bridges are made to accommodate vehicles and not foot traffic.  This historic bridge once updated with its new pedestrian purpose will give many people the opportunity to slow down and appreciate the world around them.

Pedestrian-friendly paths and bridges are welcomed in Georgia, where pedestrian accidents rose significantly in recent years. The state implemented a hands-free law for drivers, which officials credited with the reduction in vehicle occupant deaths in the state. However, pedestrian deaths are trending upward, and infrastructure may be part of the problem. When states do not offer viable pedestrian-friendly alternatives, people often end up sharing the road with vehicle traffic, putting themselves in riskier situations.  Installing more sidewalks, pedestrian bridges, crosswalks and other safety features will likely help keep people safer on the roadway.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
