Biking in Central Florida Presents High Risk of Deaths
ORLANDO, FL- Clickorlando.com writes that 149 cyclists died in crashes in Florida last year. The numbers indicate that cycling in Florida is a risky business with a higher chance of being involved in a deadly crash than in most other places around the country.*
State law says that cyclists have the right to use the roadway and that drivers are obligated to give bikes at least three feet of space when passing them on the road. Cyclists are intended to follow all traffic rules while riding on Florida roadways. However, even following the rules and exercising caution is no guarantee of safety. One cyclist died after a car struck him while he was in a designated bike lane. Police reports indicate that the driver was on her phone when she struck the man, who was a military veteran.
Cyclists set up memorials called “Ghost Bikes” to mark the locations of fatal cyclist accidents.
Cycling has become more popular in the State and across the country. While more bike lanes are being added, cyclists are still facing a high risk of injuries and death largely because drivers are failing to pay attention to the road.
Cyclists have no shortages of close calls on the roadway. Avid cyclists say the problem is often distracted drivers who are looking at their phones. GoPro videos taken by cyclists and capturing near-accidents are being compiled by reporters to show just how dangerous biking can be in the Sunshine State.
Safety experts say cyclists need to be cautious and always wear a helmet. Unfortunately, there is little the average cyclist can do to force drivers to put down their phones and follow the rules.
