Vaping Related Illnesses Rise Across The United States
USA- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is closely monitoring cases of the vaping-related lung condition "EVALI," according to CNBC.com. EVALI stands for e-cigarette or vaping product associated lung injury, and the new illness is reported to have sickened 2,172 individuals and tragically killed 42. Officials are struggling to understand the cause of this lung injury and to curb the outbreak.*
All 29 lung tissue samples tested from patients diagnosed with the disease contained the oil vitamin E acetate which is often found in vitamins and lotions. While vitamin E acetate is typically safe when used in lotions and ingested in vitamin supplements, it may be hazardous when inhaled into a person's lungs. The oil has been emerging in illegal vaping products containing THC, the psychotropic compound in marijuana.
Researchers say no single brand, product, additive, or substance is definitively to blame for the condition and that the issue is probably more complicated.
Patients diagnosed with EVALI report symptoms, including coughing, fever, nausea, and shortness of breath. In one recent case, a 17-year-old boy received a full lung transplant because of EVALI. Doctors say that the otherwise healthy teen would have died without the operation.
The risks associated with vaping are not well understood as the products are relatively new to the market. Many doctors believe the outbreak is only the beginning. While doctors advise against vaping in general, people who do vape are being urged by the FDA and CDC to avoid THC containing products. Most of these illegal vaping products are not regulated and may contain dangerous ingredients.
