Florida Officials Find Fair Ride Involved in 2018 Injury Incident was a ‘Knock-Off’
JACKSONVILLE, FL. – Florida officials have discovered that a fair ride involved in a 2018 injury incident was a “knock-off,” according to a news report on NEWS4JAX.com. During investigation of the incident, which injured seven people, state investigators found out that the claimed manufacturer did not actually make the ride.*
The incident occurred on the Sky Flyer ride in November 2018, during the Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair. The Sky Flyer features swings that fly out from the center and move up and down throughout the ride. Children younger than age twelve were not allowed to ride alone, according to manufacturing guidelines for the ride.
On the day in question, the operator of the ride lowered the swings too far, and several people crashed into the platform fencing. The operator said that he had noticed a child who was swinging in her seat, and he started lowering the ride to remove her. He said that he was looking behind him for the child’s parents, and that’s when the ride crashed.
Seven people, including five children, were injured in the accident. One child sustained a lung puncture and broken ribs. Investigators determined that each child who was hospitalized following the incident was under the age of twelve, the youngest of whom was only seven years old. The Florida Bureau of Fair Rides Inspection cited the owner of the ride, Midway Rides of Utica, and the operator for letting small children on the ride without guardians and for failing to monitor the ride.
During the course of the investigation, officials also found that the ride in question was not manufactured by the stated company. Inspectors said that the manufacturer ID plate on the ride said it was an "AK" (name of the manufacturer) ride, but that company said it did not make this ride. The Sky Flyer is now banned in Florida until it is claimed by a manufacturer.
