NTSB Urges States to Pass Bicycle Helmet Laws
UNITED STATES – The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is urging states to pass bicycle helmet laws, as the agency is reporting a rise in deadly bicycle accidents in the country, according to an online news story reported by WSOCTV.com. Not all states have mandatory helmet laws for riders of all ages, including North Carolina and South Carolina.*
South Carolina has no helmet law, according to the online news report, and North Carolina has a helmet law that only requires riders under age sixteen to wear helmets.
In 2018, close to 860 bicyclists were killed in traffic accidents in the United States. This represents an increase of more than six percent compared to 2017. In bicycle accidents, head injuries are the leading cause of death. Helmets are the best and easiest way for riders to prevent serious head injuries, the agency says.
In addition to helmets, NTSB noted that bicycle lanes and road infrastructure that separates bicycles from vehicles greatly help to reduce bicycle wrecks and bicyclist fatalities. Numerous cities in the country have been working to create more bike-friendly roadways. For instance, in Charlotte, North Carolina, a protected bicycle lane was recently installed on 6th Street. However, NTSB says more needs to be done to protect vulnerable bike riders.
NTSB offered some suggestions for bicyclists as proactive measures while riding. The agency says that visibility is important with clothing, lights and technology. Cyclists should wear bright clothing and reflective gear and should think about installing lights on their bicycles. These easy suggestions will help drivers see cyclists in the dark with the hopes of saving a life.
