Members of U.S. House of Representatives Propose Bill to Fund Bicycling and Pedestrian Safety Measures
UNITED STATES – According to an online news report published on USA.StreetsBlog.org, three members of Congress proposed providing cities in the U.S. several billion dollars in federal transportation funds to increase roadway safety, given that that the number of bicyclist and pedestrian deaths have reached an all-time high since 1990.*
Three House of Representative members introduced the Vision Zero Act, which would allow for federal grants to be given to localities that have programs aimed at decreasing the number of accidents and that help bicyclists and pedestrians safely maneuver in public spaces. One of the members indicated that Congress must do something given that there is a significant increase in the number of pedestrian and bicycle accidents over the past ten years. About 36,560 individuals tragically died across the U.S. in traffic accidents back in 2018, with cities bearing the brunt of the fatalities. In this view, pedestrian deaths have increased by nearly 70% in urbanized areas since 2009, while bicycle-related deaths have increased by 48%.
“We cannot accept the failure of rising traffic deaths, especially considering those deaths disproportionately impact low-income and vulnerable communities,” one Congressional member stated. “The Vision Zero Act will allow federal funding to aid in reducing preventable traffic fatalities that are devastating communities across the country. Everyone deserves access to safe, equitable transportation options.”
For smaller cities and rural areas, the funding may be especially appealing if resources are lacking to improve existing infrastructure and there is an appeal to improve roadway safety. To learn more about roadway safety, visit iridesafe.com.
