Texas is the Third Highest in Vehicle-Pedestrian Deaths in the Nation, Florida Ranks Second

TEXAS – Texas is the third highest in the nation for vehicle-pedestrian deaths, according to an online news report published on CHRON.com.  The Governors Highway Safety Association put together the Pedestrian Traffic Fatalities by State report using preliminary data comparing a six-month period in 2017 to a six month period in 2018.  The results indicated that Texas had an increase in pedestrian deaths.

California ranked number one in pedestrian deaths according to the report and went from 468 deaths between January and June of 2017 to 432 during the same time period in 2018, which represents a decrease by eight percent.  Florida, which ranked as number two in the country in pedestrian fatalities, went from 326 in 2017 to 330 in 2018.  This represents a 1% increase in Florida pedestrian fatalities. Texas, on the other hand, went from 266 fatalities to 298, representing a twelve percent increase.  

Per the report, there were 2,876 pedestrian fatalities that were reported during the first half of 2018 in the country.  This means that Texas alone represents over 10% of pedestrian fatalities in the country.

The report further provides that five states, including Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia and Texas, accounted for almost half — 46%— of all pedestrian deaths.  By comparison, these states only represent 33% of the nation's population.  New Mexico had the highest rate of pedestrian deaths per resident population, while New Hampshire had the lowest.

In general, states reported a range of changes in the number of pedestrian fatalities in the first half of 2018 compared with the same period in 2017:  Twenty-five states (and Washington D.C.) had increases in pedestrian fatalities; twenty-three states had decreases; and two states remained the same.
