Early Statistics Indicate that Georgia's Hand's-Free Law Saves Lives
GEORGIA – Per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drivers who engage in distracting behaviors such as talking on a cellphone are four times more likely to be involved in an accident than motorists who are paying attention when behind the wheel, according to an online editorial published on WTVM.com. Even more disturbing is the fact that the chances of a collision are 23 percent higher when a motorist is texting or emailing while driving.
It has been a year since Georgia enacted its Hand's-Free Law, which bans drivers from holding or using their cellphones when behind the wheel unless the driver utilizes hands-free technology such as Bluetooth.
However, many people still text while driving despite the newly enacted law. Maybe you've seen it when you glanced over at the person driving next to you. This person could be anywhere on the roadway. However, taking your eyes off of the road for just five seconds to send a text is equivalent to driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed.
In Georgia, there were 697 fatalities in car crashes from January to June of this year. The year prior, there were 730 fatalities during that same time period. This suggests that Georgia’s Hands-Free Law may have saved 23 lives during that same six-month time period.
The age group most prone to driver distractions is 16 to 24-year-olds. The Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety wants you to remember, "Heads Up." This could save your life.
