City Council in Tucker, Georgia, Votes to Ban E-Scooters

October 18, 2019

TUCKER, GA. – According to an online news report posted at, the city council in Tucker, Georgia, voted to ban electric scooters (e-scooters). The vote came close to the expiration of an existing ban of the e-scooters in Tucker that was in place for 120 days.*

In a 5-to-1 vote, the Tucker City Council decided on October 14 to ban e-scooters from the city. Tucker Community and Economic Development Director John McHenry read the ordinance at the council meeting and discussed the issues at the forefront of the ban. He indicated that numerous e-scooter accident fatalities had occurred in and around Atlanta, Georgia, and people in the City of Tucker were at risk for accidents if the e-scooters were allowed on the streets.

McHenry stated that the city did not have the proper infrastructure to accommodate e-scooters, and when they were still allowed in the city, the e-scooters were being abandoned on busy roadways, like Lawrenceville Highway and Lavista Road. The majority of council members agreed with the director’s arguments, and they voted in favor of the ban.

Noelle Monferdini was the sole opposer to the ordinance. She expressed in a statement that the city needed to have more options for transportation and said that e-scooters provided a way for people to travel the last mile to their destinations from public transit stations or to avoid waiting for public transit during shorter commutes. Monferdini said that she felt additional work with scooter companies to maximize safety was more appropriate than an outright ban on the vehicles.

In passing the ban, Tucker becomes one of several Georgia cities to prohibit e-scooter travel. The cities of Alpharetta, Lilburn, Marietta, Norcross, Smyrna, Snellville, and Woodstock have also passed e-scooter bans in 2019.
