Motorcyclists in South Carolina Face Constant Risks and Dangers

Statistically, risks to motorcyclists are higher in South Carolina than nearly every other southeastern state. Motorcyclists on the road say that they feel they are less safe in recent years than in the past. The impression riders are getting is backed up by statistics.

Potholes, distracted drivers, and other roadway hazards make biking a dangerous form of transportation and recreation. While riders know they are facing risks, many of them balk at proposed safety measures that place the onus of preventing accidents on the bikers themselves. Many of these bikers do not want to wear helmets or to take courses on safe riding. Instead, many of them feel that others on the roadway, specifically those driving larger vehicles, should be paying more attention to bikers and looking out for them to avoid accidents. 

While making helmets mandatory is a controversial topic in the motorcyclist community, studies indicate that the risk of death is reduced by around 42% by helmet use and that almost seventy-five percent of those motorcyclists killed on roads in South Carolina are not using helmets at the time of the fatal crashes. 

Bikers also often resist the idea of making safety courses mandatory. Even bikers who recognize inexperience as one of the main risks motorcyclists face on the road often say it is not the government’s place to put restrictions on those who wish to ride motorcycles.

The main problem, according to bikers, is drivers of four-wheeled vehicles who often claim not to have seen a motorcycle after they are involved in a collision. For drivers of larger vehicles, a crash with a motorcycle may cause some minor damage to their vehicle. The harm to the motorcyclist in an accident of that nature can be deadly.
