Driver Facing Charges after Striking and Killing an 81-Year-Old Avid Bicyclist
GREENSVILLE COUNTY, VA. – According to an online news report at wtvr.com, a man was arrested after causing a hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of an 81-year-old avid bicyclist over the weekend in Greensville County.*
The Greensville County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the scene of a bicycle accident that occurred in the early morning hours over the weekend. The 911 caller indicates that a person and a bicycle was found in a ditch located along the 1000 block of Slagles Lake Road.
"Upon arrival of the deputies, it appeared that the pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle and the vehicle had left scene," noted the Greensville County sheriff. The deceased individual was an 81-year-old man who was an avid biker. It appears that the male bicyclist was heading to a bicycle-related event in Gates County, North Carolina. "He was a kind and caring gentleman that will be missed by our community," the sheriff noted.
A search was conducted for the suspect who fled the scene after striking the bicyclist. Police were able to find the man, a 35-year-old from Greensville, Virginia. The suspect is facing charges of hit-and-run as well as involuntary manslaughter. The individual is currently being held at a local jail under a $5,000 secured bond.
A joint investigation is being conducted by the Greensville County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police.
