Alabama Sees Spike in Pedestrian Fatalities
MONTGOMERY, AL- Wsfa.com writes that pedestrian deaths in Alabama are on the rise. The numbers have increased rapidly in the last decade. According to a spokesperson with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), part of the problem is that drivers are not focused on the road.*
Data is now indicating a decline in deaths among people inside of vehicles and an increase in fatal crashes involving those individuals who are outside of vehicles. Numbers indicate a 60 percent jump in pedestrian deaths between 2008 and 2018. The top three deadliest counties for pedestrians are Jefferson, Mobile, and Montgomery.
Many pedestrians are struck while walking on or near the roadway. Sometimes these victims are people whose cars broke down and who are walking to get assistance or are repairing a damaged vehicle on the side of the road. Sadly, many of these people do not realize that oncoming traffic will frequently not be able to see them.
Many of the crashes take place at night. Nationally, 76 percent of people struck by cars are hit when it is dark outside. Wearing reflective gear helps increase the chances of a driver noticing a pedestrian.
Early reports nationwide indicate that 2019 had more pedestrian deaths than 2018, making it the deadliest year for these tragic crashes in more than three decades.
