Pedestrian Deaths Increasing in Alabama
MONTGOMERY, AL- Wsfa.com writes that pedestrians are tragically dying in higher numbers across the state of Alabama. Both in the state and nationally, a massive increase has been seen over the course of the last decade.
Officials in the state say that a big part of the problem is that drivers are not putting all of their focus on the task at hand. Numbers published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicate that while vehicle occupants are less likely to die in car crashes, pedestrian fatalities continue to increase year after year.
In Alabama, specifically, the number of fatal pedestrian crashes rose 60 percent between 2008 and the most recent statistics.
In order to lower the numbers, both pedestrians and drivers will have to be more cautious. No one should be navigating the roadway on foot or in a car while texting or looking at a screen.
Another safety tip urged by the authorities is that if your vehicle breaks down on the road, do not exit near oncoming traffic. Make sure that if at all possible, you remain in the car until it is in a safe place. Drivers approaching your disabled vehicle may not see it in time. If you get out of the car, you will be even more vulnerable in a crash.
Extra caution is warranted at night when visibility becomes a factor. About 76 percent of people killed in accidents were struck after dark in 2018. For pedestrians, consider wearing bright colors or reflective gear when walking at night. Anything that increases the chances of a driver seeing you will help lower the risk of being struck by a car.
