Orlando Developing Plans to Increase Safety on Roadways
ORLANDO, FL- Pedestrians and cyclists are facing many risks in Orlando, according to Curbed.com. One local described the injuries she sustained when she was biking with her thirteen-year-old son. The victim was walking her bike across the street just blocks from her home when a Jeep Laredo struck her. The woman crashed into the windshield before being thrown onto the pavement. At the time she was hit, she had a walk signal and the right-of-way, and it was bright and sunny out. Still, the driver claimed to have failed to see the pedestrian before attempting to make a right turn on red.*
Another woman described the day she learned her father, who cycled 30 miles a day, died when a driver failed to see the retired engineer. The cyclist had the right-of-way and was in a crosswalk, but the at-fault driver collided with him, killing him instantly.
Florida is ranked as the worst state for pedestrian safety in the country. The roads are made with the intention of minimizing congestion and maximizing speed, not protecting pedestrians and cyclists.
The city is planning to make its roads more pedestrian-friendly. Developers have ideas about how to accomplish that, including decreasing the width of lanes, adding medians, and changing traffic lights to give better crossing opportunities to pedestrians. While funding is still a challenge, more people are acknowledging that changes are needed and that these changes are attainable.
