Florida Highway Patrol Issues Statement Telling Drivers Not to Flee Accident Scenes
FL - Florida Highway Patrol issued a statement leading up to "hit-and-run awareness month," which is February. The message is simple; drivers must remain at the scene of an accident. Hit-and-run collisions are common in the United States, and according to statewide statistics, about one in every four crashes in Florida involves a fleeing driver.*
Miami-Dade County has more hit-and-runs than any other county in Florida, according to WINKNEWS.COM. One woman spoke to reporters about the hole left in her life when her 45-year-old son was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash in 2018. The victim had exited his vehicle when a passing driver collided with him and fled the scene.
Police are reminding drivers that fleeing is not just a mistake but is a criminal act. When a driver flees the scene of a crash that involves a fatality, the minimum sentence is four years in prison and the penalty could be up to thirty years in prison. Even fleeing the scene after causing property damage can result in criminal charges and jail time.
Officers also reminded the public that the police often require assistance in identifying the suspects in these situations. If a person witnesses a hit-and-run crash, they can contact the police or Crime Stoppers to report any information that they have regarding the vehicle or driver involved. In many cases, the only way that police are ever able to catch the driver is through helpful tips from the public.
