Florida Lawmaker Recommends Installation of Red Traffic Lights At Crosswalks

January 21, 2020

FL- Winknews.com writes that in the wake of a tragic pedestrian crash that killed a twelve-year-old girl in Brevard County, State Rep. Randy Fine wants to pass legislation that could prevent future similar accidents. The collision took place last December at a crosswalk that was protected with yellow lights. Drivers who see flashing yellow lights at crosswalks in Florida are supposed to stop and let pedestrians cross.

Sadly, in some instances, the lights seem to only give pedestrians a false sense of security while failing to impress upon drivers the need to stop. The new proposed legislation would change the yellow lights to red, and drivers would be required to stop and allow people to cross at the crosswalks for the red light. Florida is one of the most dangerous states for pedestrians, and some believe that these types of traffic control devices are part of the reason.

State Rep. Fine from Brevard County stated that drivers are often confused by the yellow lights and that some even speed up when they see them. The confusion created by these devices now has a record of being deadly.

The representative would like to see the red lights installed.  If that's not possible, then he wants the current devices removed. He fears pedestrians put themselves at risk at these crosswalks where the devices are currently installed. Drivers who encounter the current signals may mistakenly yield the right of way with a flashing yellow light instead of stopping, putting the pedestrian in grave danger.

The basis of the proposed law is simple: red tells drivers to stop, while yellow does not carry that message. The messages traffic signals send to drivers need to be straightforward and easily understood by all.
