Alabama Pedestrian Fatalities on the Rise
MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA — Pedestrian fatalities are on the rise in Alabama and in the United States generally. Distracted driving is believed to be a primary factor for the increase in pedestrian deaths. Distracted walking is also a significant factor in fatal pedestrian crashes.
Pedestrian fatalities have reached a new peak since 2008 across the nation. In Alabama, pedestrian deaths have risen an unimaginable 60 percent. Montgomery, Alabama, has the third-highest fatality rate in the state. Jefferson County has the highest, and Mobile County is second.
The Alabama State Police believe that both motorists and pedestrians can take specific measures to guard against pedestrian crashes. The state police remind motorists not to drive while intoxicated and to ignore all potential distractions while operating a vehicle. Therefore, drivers must put away their cellphones and pull over to operate a GPS device. Safely operating a vehicle must take priority.
The state police suggest that moving a disabled vehicle as far off of the roadway as possible will help. People who break down must recognize that oncoming cars might not observe a disabled vehicle or pedestrians standing by a disabled vehicle.
Since 66 percent of all fatal pedestrian accidents in Alabama happen because of pedestrian error, pedestrians must do what they can to protect themselves. Nighttime is the most dangerous time to be a pedestrian. In the U.S., 76 percent of pedestrians killed in 2018 were walking in the dark. People who plan to be out on the road in the dark should wear reflective materials and carry a flashlight, according to the Alabama State Police.
