September 19, 2019

KINSTON, NC – According to an online news report at, a male motorcyclist was injured after his bike was struck by a vehicle.*

The accident occurred on West Vernon Avenue over the weekend in the early afternoon hours.  Officials note that a 19-year-old male was operating a 2003 Oldsmobile passenger vehicle on Georgia Highway 70 when he was attempting to turn left across traffic flowing in a westerly direction.

The victim, a 58-year-old man, was going west on Georgia Highway 70 and as the teenager’s vehicle went to make his turn, the motorcycle hit into the vehicle.  The motorcyclist sustained injuries in the accident and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.  The man was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The teenager is expected to face charges in the accident.  It is not clear whether the teen was driving while impaired.  There are no further details on the accident at this time. The crash remains under investigation by the local police.

Drivers who turn left in front of a motorcycle are the main cause of motorcycle accidents in the United States. According to the Hunt Report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “[t]he most common motorcycle accident involves another vehicle causing the collision by violating the right-of-way of the motorcycle at an intersection, usually by turning left in front of the oncoming motorcycle because the car driver did not see the motorcycle.”   The NHTSA also provides in the report that single-vehicle motorcycle accidents are common when a motorcyclist crashes into an object (such as a tree) in order to avoid a collision with another vehicle that turned left in front of him or her.
