Motorcyclist Dies in Crash on Hollow Street in Durham, North Carolina (NC)
DURHAM, NC- Abc11.com writes that a motorcyclist died in a crash in North Carolina this week. The incident occurred in the evening on Holloway Street at North Hyde Avenue.*
Reports indicate that a Honda Fit made a left turn at the intersection and entered the motorcyclist’s path. The victim was a 24-year-old man from Durham. Responders rushed the man to the hospital, but he died a short while after the crash.
The driver involved in the incident, identified as a 45-year-old man, fled the crash scene. Police later located the man and arrested him on felony hit-and-run charges.
Nationally, hit-and-run crashes are becoming increasingly common. The AAA found that the number of people killed in hit-and-run incidents increased by 60 percent from 2009 through 2016, with 2016 being the most recent year studied, and the deadliest on record.
Most victims tend to be vulnerable road users. In terms of deadly hit-and-runs per capita, North Carolina comes in seventeenth place.
When trying to explain why these wrecks are becoming increasingly common, the AAA states that crash deaths, in general, went up during the same period. In terms of pedestrian collisions, one in five pedestrian deaths is caused by a fleeing motorist. While the number of deaths increased, the percentage remained the same for a ten year period.
The AAA also states that vulnerable road users are the victims in more of these incidents simply because the cars involved are more likely to remain drivable after a crash than would vehicles involved in a severe multi-vehicle collision. Still, even multi-vehicle hit-and-run crashes are on the rise, indicating the existence of additional factors.
