Pedestrian Dies in Tragic Crash on Highway 50 in Johnson County, North Carolina (NC)
JOHNSON COUNTY, NC- Abc11.com writes that a crash left a pedestrian dead this week in Johnson County. The early morning incident occurred on NC Highway 50 at its intersection with Buckeye Trail in Cleveland.*
When first responders found the victim, the individual was in the middle of the roadway. According to the State Highway Patrol, the person appears to have been sitting in the street when the car struck him. The vehicle involved was identified as a 2016 Dodge Charger. Reports indicate that the car was traveling north when it struck the person.
Police have been unable to identify the victim and are now reaching out to the public for assistance. The man is described as Hispanic, in his mid-20s or early 30s, 5’7”, and has a scorpion tattoo on his arm. Officers are asking anyone with information regarding the pedestrian to contact the State Highway Patrol.
Statistics indicate that pedestrians are dying in larger numbers in North Carolina, but the reason for the increase is not clear. Between 2009 and 2018, the number of pedestrians killed annually jumped by 54 percent.
Nationally, numbers are also up in recent years. The most pedestrians to die in a single year in the United States was about 8,000. That took place in 1980, and after that point, the numbers began to decline. In 2009, 4,109 fatal pedestrian crashes took place, indicating a record low. Sadly, the figures then began to trend upward again. By 2018, more than 6,000 people died in pedestrian crashes.
Safety advocates say that the statistics should be seen as an alarm to the country and that more must be done to protect the nation’s vulnerable road users.
