Auto Crash Kills a Pedestrian in Lillington, Harnett County North Carolina (NS)

July 15, 2020

LILLINGTON, N.C. — An identified pedestrian died after being struck by a car in Harnett County, North Carolina. According to ABC 11, the fatal pedestrian crash happened in the vicinity of the intersection between Jim Christian Rd United States Hwy 421. The intersection is located in Lillington, North Carolina. North Carolina State Highway Patrol investigators race to the scene end found the pedestrian deceased in the roadway. The Harnett County Sheriff’s Department has joined the investigation as well. The officers did not identify anyone involved in the crash, which remains under investigation with local and state authorities. Sadly, this fatal pedestrian crash is just one of many that have happened in North Carolina for the last decade.*

The rising trend of pedestrian fatalities in North Carolina closely resembles that of the nation as a whole. After experiencing the lowest number of pedestrian deaths in 2009, North Carolina’s pedestrian death rate has increased by 54%. The population rate of North Carolina has grown by amount five times less than the increase in pedestrian fatalities since 2009.

Similarly, the aggregate number of pedestrian deaths nationwide in 1980 was reported to be around 8,000.  The total number of pedestrian deaths throughout the United States in 2009 was 4,109. There is almost a 50% decrease since 1980. However, since the successes of 2009, the number of pedestrian fatalities has steadily increased.

In 2017, 5,977 pedestrians died in collisions with motor vehicles. Statistical estimates developed during the first half of 2018, which are the most recent statistics available at this time, predict that 6,227 people might be killed in the United States in 2018. If the statistical prediction were correct, 2018 would be the deadliest year for pedestrians in the United States since 1990.

Tragically the predictions were correct. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that it calculated 6,283 pedestrians died in 2018, which is the highest total of pedestrian deaths in 28 years.
