Man Tragically Killed in South Carolina Crash in Fairfield County, North Carolina (NC)

May 04, 2020

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, SC- Wltx.com writes that a crash on Interstate 77 left one man dead this week in Fairfield County. The victim, identified as a 64-year-old man from Rock Hill was declared dead at the scene of the collision.*

The victim was stopped in his truck on Interstate 77 with no lights on in his vehicle. Another truck collided with the victim’s truck, and then a semi-truck also struck the victim’s vehicle. The incident is still under investigation.

One recent study found that South Carolina comes in third in the nation when it comes to fatal crashes. The report used data from 2016 and looked at the number of deaths per 100,000 people in the state. In South Carolina, there were 20.5 fatalities per 100,000 people, placing the Palmetto State behind Mississippi and Alabama. The study was critical of law enforcement in South Carolina because the state had issued just 53 distracted driving citations for the entire year of 2016. The minimum fine in the state for such violations is only $25. States that have more strict distracted driving policies and enforcement have been more successful at lowering the number of distracted driving-related collisions.

Nationally, car crashes have been dropping each year. In 2018, the country reported a decline of 2.4 percent in deaths caused by vehicle collisions. While the dropping car crash numbers are encouraging, there were still 36,560 crash-related fatalities in the United States that year. The numbers leave plenty of room for improvement.

Data suggested fatal crashes that killed children dropped by about 10.3 percent. Drunk-driving crashes decreased by 3.6 percent, and speeding-related fatalities declined 5.7 percent. Pedestrian and cyclist deaths increased during the same time frame.
