Motorcyclist Killed in Crash in Winston-Salem, North Carolina (NC)

April 30, 2020

FORSYTH COUNTY, NC- Myfox8.com writes that a motorcyclist was killed in Forsyth County this week in a crash that took place on Reynolda Road. The incident involved a Suzuki motorcycle and a Honda passenger vehicle.*

The Honda was reportedly attempting to make a left turn at the time of the collision. The motorcycle struck the side of the car. The victim was identified only as having been a man from Winston-Salem. The road was closed for several hours while investigators worked at the scene.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), motorcycles are more dangerous to ride than cars are to drive. Beyond the fact that motorcycles are not enclosed and do not offer many safety features available in cars, riding on two wheels is less stable that driving on four. Motorcyclists face more challenges trying to swerve or to apply their brakes in an emergency. Additionally, because they are smaller, other drivers often fail to notice motorcycles.

Because of all of the extra risks motorcyclists face as compared to drivers, the chances of being killed in a motorcycle crash are about 27 times as likely as those of dying in a car crash.

Helmets are one way to lower the risk of riding a motorcycle, and the IIHS states that they are effective at reducing the chances of dying in a crash by 37 percent. Riders who are not using helmets are also at a far greater risk of sustaining a traumatic brain injury than are helmeted motorcyclists. Another way to increase safety on a motorcycle is to ride a bike with antilock brakes. The chances of being in a deadly crash drop by 31 percent on bikes with this feature.
