Woman Killed in Fayetteville Wrong-Way Collision in Fayetteville, North Carolina

March 24, 2020

FAYETTEVILLE, NC- Cbs17.com writes that a deadly collision took place in Fayetteville on the All American Boulevard. The wreck led to lengthy delays as a large section of the road was closed for the investigation and the cleanup.*

Police reports indicate that a motorist was traveling the wrong direction in the inbound lanes during the late morning and caused the incident. The victim has been identified as a 75-year-old woman who was operating a 2020 Toyota Corolla. A 24-year-old woman in a 2015 Chevrolet Impala was traveling in the correct direction when the two cars crashed into one another. The woman in the Toyota died in the impact. The driver in the Impala sustained severe injuries and was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Reports indicate that the young woman is now stable. There were two children in the Impala as well, and both suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the wreck.

Wrong-way collisions are crashes that take place when a driver is traveling against the flow of traffic on a divided roadway. In the case of a wrong-way crash, the incident is not a matter of a driver drifting into oncoming traffic, as would be the case in many head-on collisions. Instead, in a wrong-way incident, a driver must have entered a highway or interstate on an exit ramp or made some other type of severe driving error.

These incidents kill around 300 to 400 people in the United States each year. Head-on collisions are dangerous because of the forces at play. Wrong-way crashes are often head-on collisions but at high rates of speed, making the risk of death severe in these devastating wrecks.
