Severe Crash on Highway 8 Seriously Injures One in Lexington, North Carolina

March 15, 2020

LEXINGTON, NC- The-dispatch.com writes that a two-vehicle wreck sent two people to the hospital this week in Lexington, North Carolina. The incident occurred in the late morning when a 2001 BMW driving southbound on Highway 8 veered over the center line and into oncoming traffic. The vehicle crashed head-on with a 2016 Lincoln SUV that was driving northbound.*

The driver operating the BMW sustained severe injuries in the crash. He was identified as a 24-year-old man from Lexington. Reports indicate that the young driver was trapped in the BMW, and responders had to extricate him from the car. The man was rushed to the Wake Forest Baptist Health Medical Center located in Winston-Salem via airlift. Police charged the man for driving left of center. No details have emerged regarding the man’s condition.

A 56-year-old woman from Lexington was operating the Lincoln SUV and was transported to the Wake Forest Baptist-Lexington Medical Center for treatment of injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

The frightening truth about head-on collisions is that many roads in the United States make it easy for a split-second error to result in a deadly crash. Poorly designed roads are those that have high-speed limits, but no median to prevent cars from drifting left of center. On these roadways, it is far too easy for a motorist who is glancing at a phone or changing the radio station to cross into oncoming traffic. Of course, when this happens, the person who is traveling the correct direction will not have a chance to make evasive maneuvers and avoid the impact. Better roads could save lives.
