Police Chase Results in Collision in Franklin County, North Carolina

March 02, 2020

SPRING HOPE, NC- Wnct.com writes that a car chase resulted in a collision this week in Franklin County. The incident began in Nash County but proceeded over county lines.*

Police saw two men who were wanted by law enforcement riding in a vehicle and began the pursuit. The chase started on NC 581, and after the driver jumped out of the running vehicle, the car crashed with the passenger still inside. The man was brought to the hospital with injuries from the collision. Police reports have not indicated what crimes the suspects were originally wanted for, but they are both now facing charges.

Police chases are often dangerous and many end in collisions. In Georgia, where two innocent people recently died because of a car chase, the practice has come under scrutiny. Police stated that more than 50 percent of the state’s police pursuits resulted in collisions, and about half of the chases result in the person getting away from the police. Given the high rate of collisions and a low rate of success in apprehending suspects, many people feel that the chases are an unnecessary risk.

Younger police officers are more likely to engage in these chases. Not only do the suspects pose a risk to the public’s safety, but police say that the officers can get tunnel vision in the course of these stressful pursuits. Police may run through stop signs or traffic lights while trying to catch the suspect.

Officers say that it is important for people who see a police chase occurring to get to the right side of the road for their own safety.
