Mail Carrier Killed in Tragic North Carolina Crash

February 10, 2020

ROXBORO, NC - Cbs17.com writes that a mail carrier died in a car accident late last week in Person County. The incident severely injured the victim’s thirteen-year-old son as well. The boy remains in the hospital, even as the community is mourning his father’s death.*

The victim’s employer set up a memorial to the worker, who everyone said was always loving and caring. The collision occurred on US 158 when another vehicle braked hard, causing their car to turn sideways. Reports indicate the victim was unable to stop to avoid striking the other car. The 30-year-old driver in the other vehicle is facing charges for the crash, including misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. The victim also volunteered as a basketball coach. According to the victim’s wife, their son is still awaiting surgery to address injuries that he sustained in the collision. The family set up a GoFundMe page.

North Carolina has a poor record when it comes to car accident statistics. The state came in fifth out of all states in the nation when it comes to car crash fatalities. Ahead of North Carolina were Georgia, Florida, California, and Texas. About one out of three of the deadly crashes in the state were the results of a drunk driver.

Reports indicate that part of the problem is the city of Charleston, where fatal crashes continue to rise. Another issue is the failure of many residents in South Carolina to use their seatbelts. More than 60 percent of fatal crashes involved victims who were not restrained. In addition to car occupants, pedestrian deaths also are increasing in the state, as are cyclist fatalities.
