HUNTERSVILLE, NC- Wbtv.com writes that a vehicle struck a woman in Huntersville, North Carolina this week. The late evening accident took place on Statesville Road leading the authorities to shut down the busy street.*

Tragic Pedestrian Crash in Huntersville Kills Woman

Police identified the victim as a 65-year-old woman from Pennsylvania. No additional information regarding the cause of the crash exists at this time. Police did not charge the driver but stated that they are still investigating the incident. Officers asked anyone with information regarding the accident to report it to the traffic safety department.

Reports suggest that the number of pedestrian deaths in North Carolina increased by more than thirteen percent between 2017 and 2018. In 2009, the state hit a low point with 148 pedestrian deaths, and since that time, the number of fatalities rose by 54 percent. A similar trend played out around the country. In 2009, the United States reported 4,109 people died in these incidents indicating a drastic drop from a high of more than 8,000 in 1980. In 2018 the pedestrian death toll surpassed 6,000, making it the deadliest year in nearly three decades.

Cellphones and SUVs are taking much of the blame. Electronics lead to distracted drivers and pedestrians. Larger vehicles make crashes deadlier for those traveling on foot. Some people also point to the success of the anti-drunk driving message. While drunk driving rates are much lower, people who choose to walk to avoid driving under the influence may put themselves at risk as pedestrians.

Road design is not helping either. The streets allow fast-moving traffic and often fail to provide infrastructure for pedestrians. Our streets could be improved to prevent many of these tragedies.
