Man Dies on Highway 87 in Harnett County, North Carolina Pedestrian Accident

December 08, 2019

HARNETT COUNTY, NC- Abc11.com writes that a man died in a pedestrian accident in Harnett County over the weekend. Police say that the 22-year-old victim was on Highway 87 near a Walmart at the time of the crash. The driver fled the scene after striking the man.*

The police reported that the suspect’s vehicle is a white Nissan Altima. The car sustained severe damage on its front. The vehicle was last seen driving northbound.

The victim died before responders arrived at the scene.

Hit-and-run crashes are common throughout the country, and sadly, they are increasing each year. A report on the topic indicates that drivers who flee after a crash do so because they can, and they are motivated to leave. According to the report, many drivers cannot leave after an accident because their vehicles sustained damage in the crash. This is at least part of the reason that there are fewer fatal hit-and-run crashes involving other vehicles. When a car is in a serious crash with another car, the vehicle is often disabled. When a car hits a person, the damage may be minimal, and the person can drive away. In many cases, accidents happen on crowded streets full of witnesses and traffic. These drivers also have a difficult time fleeing. As such, hit-and-runs often occur at night, away from intersections, and the victims are often pedestrians.

While reports state that a true profile is difficult to develop because so many of these drivers are never caught, hit-and-run drivers are often people who are drunk, on drugs, or do not have a license. These drivers have a stronger motivation to flee because when caught, they are going to face more severe consequences.
