Pedestrian Killed by Car in Sparks, North Carolina

November 29, 2019

SPARKS, NV- The writes that a 55-year-old man died after a car hit him while he was crossing the street in Sparks earlier this week. The accident occurred at Vista Boulevard and Iratcabal Drive near Disc Drive during the evening.*

Reports indicate that the victim was in a crosswalk at the time of the accident. The man died at the scene of the crash.

The driver remained at the scene of the crash and is cooperating with the police.

In recent years, more pedestrians are dying on American roads than at any point during the past few decades. The high number of deaths seems to be the result of a variety of factors. The market for large cars is one of the likely reasons for many pedestrian deaths. Sedans have gone so out of fashion that manufacturers are discontinuing many models of these cars. Larger vehicles like SUVs and pickup trucks strike higher on a victim's body and cause more severe injuries.

Distracted driving and pedestrians using smartphones while walking are also often blamed for the rise in accidents. Many states now have hands-free laws that prevent drivers from using their phones while operating motor vehicles. While rules can help limit the number of distracted drivers on the road, pedestrians need to stay focused as well rather than looking at their phones while crossing the street.

Another problem is that drivers often strike pedestrians at night because of low visibility. Improvements to street lighting and headlights could make a difference and make the roads safer for everyone.
