North Carolina College Student’s Van Flips While Driving Lacrosse Players to Panther’s Game
SALISBURY, N.C.- Wbtv.com writes that a group of Catawba College lacrosse players was involved in a rollover two-vehicle accident while traveling to a Panther’s game in Charlotte over the weekend. The crash happened early in the morning at Brenner Avenue and Statesville boulevard close to the Hefner VA Medical Center. The police report indicates that the van was making a turn when it was rear-ended by another vehicle. The impact caused the larger vehicle to overturn.*
The driver of the other vehicle said that she struck the van because the sun was in her eyes, and she could not see properly. Several of the students were taken to a nearby hospital. The students were on their way to the game to sell concessions as a fundraising activity. The crash caused the closure of two lanes and the intersection as emergency responders cleared the scene.
Larger taller vehicles, such as vans, SUVs, and pickup trucks, are all at a higher risk of overturning than are sedans, which have lower centers of gravity. The top-heavy taller vehicles may overturn when they may sharp turns or travel too fast around curved roadways. While this aspect of these vehicles makes them more dangerous in single-vehicle accidents, these larger vehicles typically are better at protecting vehicle occupants when they are involved in multiple-vehicle crashes.
One of the greatest risks in rollover crashes is that the occupants could be thrown from the vehicle. Vehicle ejections have an extremely high rate of fatality. People can greatly lower their risk of being thrown from a vehicle by using a seatbelt whenever they travel in a motor vehicle.
