Teens Sustain Severe Injuries in Crash Between ATV and Car in Holden Beach, North Carolina
HOLDEN BEACH, NC- Wwaytv3.com writes that two teenagers were in an ATV when it was struck by another vehicle late week. The crash took place after dark on the Ida Mae Way SW crossing when the ATV was struck by a white sedan. The two teens, one seventeen years old and the other nineteen years old, both sustained serious harm in the crash and were airlifted to the hospital. Reports indicate both were in critical condition as a result of the crash.*
The occupants of the sedan also sustained injuries in the crash. The driver and a passenger were taken via ambulance to a local hospital.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that ATVs present a host of dangers. In 2016, the CPSC reported more than 100,000 injuries resulting from ATVs, more than one-quarter of which impacted children under the age of sixteen. On average, 532 adults and 77 children are killed using ATVs each year. Nearly one-third of all fatal crashes took place on paved roads.
The CPSC gives advice for avoiding tragic ATV accidents, including always wearing a helmet and other safety gear, avoiding paved roads, never allowing more people on the ATV than it was designed for, never letting a child ride an adult ATV, and getting trained by a qualified instructor.
The CPSC also reminds riders that ATVs are not intended to be used on paved roadways. The vehicles are unstable on these surfaces and present risks of flipping over. In many places, it is illegal to take an ATV on a paved road. Of course, riding one of these vehicles on the road will also present the risk of being involved in an accident with other, larger vehicles.
