According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, the majority of motorcycle-automobile accidents happen at intersections. Many collisions with motorcycles happen given that the driver of the passenger vehicle did not see the motorcyclist. Drivers are often looking for other trucks and cars and fail to register the much smaller frame of a motorcycle and its rider. In essence, they are looking at everything but a motorcycle in their vicinity, which often leads to serious and sometimes fatal motorcycle accidents.
Drivers of passenger vehicles can cause accidents with motorcyclist in the following ways:
- Attempting to share a lane with a motorcycle or passing too closely
- Not yielding the right of way to the biker
- Following a motorcyclist too closely
- Driving aggressively around a motorcyclist
