Motorcyclist Tragically Dies in Accident with Pickup Truck in Charlotte, North Carolina

October 31, 2019

CHARLOTTE, NC – According to an online news report at wcnc.com, a man operating a motorcycle tragically died in a crash that involved a pickup truck.  The accident occurred over the weekend.*

The victim, a 58-year-old man, was pronounced deceased at the scene.  The local police shut the road down between Tracy Avenue and David Avenue while emergency personnel and law enforcement worked the scene.  The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are currently conducting an investigation of the accident to learn more.

Motorcycle deaths are on the rise in North Carolina, according to recent data that was released by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and AAA Carolinas.   2019 may be the most deadly year yet for motorcycle accidents in the state.

In 2018, there were 170 motorcycle fatalities in North Carolina, which is up nearly 21% from 141 in 2017, as provided by the NCDOT. AAA is urging drivers of passenger vehicles to practice safety and exercise caution when sharing the road with motorcyclists.

Drivers of passenger vehicles can help make roadways safer for motorcyclists by taking some simple precautions, such as:

  • Exercising caution around motorcyclists, especially during the weekends when they tend to take to the road.
  • Making sure to leave motorcyclists with ample room to maneuver.  It is recommended by AAA Carolinas that you follow a motorcyclist at least five to six seconds behind them.
  • Allowing for extra maneuvering room in areas such as railroad crossings, pavement transitions, and potholes. Due to these conditions, motorcyclists often have to slow down, stop, or change their lane position to avoid an accident.
  • Never sharing a lane with a motorcyclists, as they have the same right to a lane as any other automobile.
  • Never driving while impaired or distracted.  Put your phone down and remain alert when behind the wheel.  Do not consume alcohol or drugs and then drive, as these behaviors lead to serious and sometimes fatal accidents.
  • If you notice a motorcyclist nearby, always be sure to check your mirrors before you decide to change lanes.
  • Always be aware that motorcyclists may be in your blind sports or difficult to see given the fact that motorcycles are smaller in size than passenger vehicles.
