Woman Slams SUV Into People at Gas Station In Fatal Pedestrian Crash in Greensboro, North Carolina
GREENSBORO, NC- The charlottebserver.com writes that two women are now facing murder charges following an incident in which they drove an SUV into a crowd of people at a North Carolina gas station over the weekend. The crash took place in the early morning hours before sunrise.*
The report indicates that the driver, a 28-year-old woman, and the 27-year-old passenger have both been charged with first-degree murder and with five-counts each of attempted murder. A 30-year-old woman was declared dead at the scene while five other people were severely injured in the incident. Three of the victims were reported to be in critical condition.
Police say that a fight had broken out at the gas station, and the two suspects got into their vehicle and then drove into the crowd. Police say the driver smelled like alcohol and refused to submit to any sobriety tests at the scene.
The police report indicates that the women ran over the deceased victim multiple times.
The driver has also been charged with driving under the influence, driving on a revoked license, for failing to reduce the speed of her vehicle to avoid an accident, for felony death by vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident.
The victim's family planned a vigil for her, which was held earlier this week.
While most pedestrian crashes are accidental, this apparently intentional crash highlights the inherent risks vehicles present to individuals on foot. Many people across the country lose their lives every year because of irresponsible, negligent, or reckless drivers. While impaired driving rates have gone down, alcohol and other drugs are still significant factors in a large number of fatal pedestrian crashes.
