Driver Hits Pedestrian, Flees Scene at Intersection in Wilmington, North Carolina

October 17, 2019

WILMINGTON, NC. – According to a news report posted online at wect.com, a driver hit a pedestrian, then fled from the scene at an intersection in downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. Police officers are still looking for the driver involved in this hit-and-run collision and are asking for the public to call in with any helpful information.*

The accident occurred during the afternoon at the intersection of North Second Street and Market Street in the downtown area of Wilmington. The Wilmington Police Department and WECT report that at approximately 1:30 p.m., a pedestrian was walking across the intersection, while a vehicle was approaching. The vehicle reportedly started to turn right at the intersection and struck the pedestrian. Following the collision, the driver left the scene.

A surveillance camera in the area captured the incident, and a photo posted to the WECT website shows that the pedestrian was in a crosswalk and partway across the street when the vehicle entered the intersection. The report did not say what direction each was headed, though the photo indicates the vehicle was attempting to turn the opposite way that the pedestrian was walking. The news report states that the light was red for the vehicle at the time.

WECT reports that the pedestrian was injured in the accident, though it is not clear if he was taken to a hospital. He was identified as a 22-year-old man from Wilmington. His current condition is unknown.

Police officers are working to track down the driver, who they believe is approximately 60 to 70 years old. The vehicle was described as a silver Hyundai Tucson. Anyone who has information about the incident or the driver is asked to contact the Wilmington Police Department at 343-3609 or to send a message to Text-a-Tip at 274637 (CRIMES).
