Pedestrian Struck and Killed in Crash in Wilmington, North Carolina

October 06, 2019

WILMINGTON, NC – According to an online news report at patch.com, the Wilmington, North Carolina police were dispatched to the scene of a pedestrian accident in the nighttime hours in the 5800 block of Oleander Drive.*

Per a report on the accident, a woman was attempting to cross the roadway when she was hit by a vehicle.  Following the crash, the victim was taken to an area hospital where she tragically died.  The name of the victim has not been released pending notification to her next-of-kin. No charges have been filed against the driver at this time.  The westerly lanes of Oleander Drive were blocked off during the investigation of the accident.  The lanes finally reopened in the late nighttime hours.  The investigation of the accident remains ongoing.

According to a report issued by the Governors Highway Safety Association, going across the roadway is more dangerous than it has been in over a quarter-century.   Recently, the group released its annual “Spotlight on Highway Safety” report that is based upon preliminary data provided by each state. This reports that about 6,000 pedestrians sustained fatal injuries by vehicles for the second year in a row.

In North Carolina, there were over 80 pedestrian-related deaths between January of 2017 and June of 2017.  This is a rate of 0.81 per 100,000 individuals and is the seventh-highest rate in the United States.  Despite having the seventh-highest fatality rate in the U.S. between this time period, the amount of pedestrian deaths decreased by 15% in 2017 than the prior year.

North Carolina is attempting to reduce the number of pedestrian deaths by launching a “Watch For Me” public campaign that has grown to 33 communities located throughout the state.  As part of this campaign, police have set up safety operations in areas where pedestrian accidents are more likely to occur.
