Pedestrian Crash Injures Woman in Garner, North Carolina
GARNER, N.C. — A woman is lucky to be alive after she was hit by a car in Garner. The woman, whose age was not provided, went to the hospital with injuries CBS 17 described as non-life-threatening. The Garner police responded to the scene of the crash along with troopers from the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Garner Police said that the troopers would take the lead on the investigation into the cause of the pedestrian accident that occurred near the intersection of Garner Road and Foxbury Drive. The investigators did not provide an update on the current medical condition of the injured pedestrian. There was no word on whether the driver would receive a citation or face criminal charges as a consequence of the accident. *
Recent statistics released by the Division of Motor Vehicle for North Carolina indicate that fatal pedestrian accidents increased by 13.4% from 2017 to 2018. According to the News Observer, 228 pedestrians died in collisions with motor vehicles in 2017. The death toll had increased 54% since the lowest level in 2009 when 148 pedestrians died in accidents. The death toll has risen at a rate five times greater than the rate of population growth in the state.
Increasing pedestrian deaths in motor vehicle accidents is not a problem unique to North Carolina. Statistics reflect that pedestrian deaths are increasing nationwide. In 1980, pedestrian fatalities exceeded 8,000. After reaching the 8,000-fatality plateau, pedestrian deaths decreased by nearly 50% when 4,109 pedestrians died in accidents. Sadly, the numbers have gone up every year since.
Public safety officials and transportation experts say that there is no one particular reason why pedestrian deaths have increased dramatically in less than ten years. Distracted driving is partly to blame for the spike in pedestrian roadway deaths. Cellphone use increased, and so has the prevalence of larger vehicles like SUVs, which, with their larger mass, give the pedestrian a lesser chance to survive a crash.
