Montlick and Associates Encourages Georgians to Have a Happy and Safe Labor Day
Labor Day weekend means family outings, sports events, camping trips and travel for many people, but traffic accidents also are more common on holiday weekends because of the increased traffic and the tendency to celebrate with alcohol. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Laborl Day weekend car accidents claim the lives of an average of 161 people across the U.S. each year. The IIHS also reports that four out of every ten of these fatalities involve an intoxicated driver.
There are examples of the havoc caused by drivers whose judgment, perception and coordination are impaired by alcohol on a daily basis in Atlanta and the surrounding areas of Georgia. One collision allegedly caused by an intoxicated Jonesboro woman last year before the holiday provides a timely reminder of just how bad one’s driving can become when under the influence of alcohol. The woman was arrested by the Gwinnett County police after she drove several miles in the wrong direction on the I-85 and caused a multi-car accident according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) report. Despite the fact that one of the vehicles involved in the four car accident flipped over multiple times, thankfully all of the vehicle occupants escaped without serious injury.
The ACJ report indicates that the driver, who Gwinnett police indicated was driving home from an Atlanta nightclub, was arrested and taken to the Gwinnett County jail where her blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was nearly twice the legal limit. She was charged with driving on the wrong side of the road, DUI, hit-and-run and reckless driving. When a motorist travels for several miles in the wrong direction on a highway or freeway, this type of dangerous practice often involves a drunk driver.
Our Georgia drunk driving accident attorneys are committed to making our roadways safer and advocating for the rights of victims of drunk drivers. In fact Montlick & Associates "Don't Drunk & Drive Campaign" is now in its 30th year. We encourage the members of our community to enjoy the Labor Day holiday and to avoid driving if you have been drinking. While it is always important to focus on one’s driving, to travel at a safe speed and to get plenty of rest prior to driving, the increased risk of driving during the busy Labor Day weekend makes these practices especially important. The IIHS also recommends avoiding the roadways between the hours of 9 pm and 6 am because the number of driver fatalities involving intoxicated motorists triples during these hours.
